The SERVICE Daemon

This daemon resides on a HOST for the purpose of serving the local net. In the case the HOST is on a public network, the serving is ofcource the whole Internet. By using a REGISTRATION daemon on the HOST this service can be registered, to handle the HOST it is started on. By using a network REGISTRATION daemon, we can also serve the local network as well as the whole Internet if we are behind any firewall. What the SERVICE daemon do, is up to the implementation of the daemon and is not covered here.

Some daemons can be mentioned; HTTPd (handle http requests, ie. the Web), BIND (handle DNS requests as well as holds the DNS database for the network it servers, possible the whole Internet), Sendmail (handles Internet MAIL requests and forwards the mail to right account).

Most of these have on a protocol level a RFC (See RFC database for more details)
